الحمار هو حيوان من جنس الحصان وهو حيوان أليف ويوجد نوع يعيش بصورة برية في وديان و صحاري أفريقيا وآسيا وبراريها ويسمى بالحمار الوحشي الحمار من الفصيلة الخيلية رتبة فردية الحافر من شعيبة الثديات من شعبة الحبليات التابعة
للمملكة الحيوانية من الكائنات الحية يعيش الحمار بين 25 , الى
30 عام فى البريه , ومدة الحمل عند انثى الحمار 11 _14 شهرا , يصل وزن الحمار البالغ الى 485 k
يشبه الحمار بشكله العام الحصان لكنه أصغر حجماً وأقرب إلى
البغل، له رأس كبير وذيل قصير ينتهي بخصلة شعر، حوافره
صغيرة وأذناه طويلتان. وتسمى أنثى الحمار أتانا والصغير
جحشاً. كما تختلف الحمير بأحجامها، المدجنة منها من 0.9 إلى
1.4م طولاً، رغم أن حمار الماموث أطول، وقد يصل طول
الحمار الأندلسي ل1.6م ارتفاعاً. الأذنان أكبر من غيرها في
جنس الأخيلة، ذات سمع أكثر حدة أيضاً، أما العينان فأكثر توجهاً
للأمام من الأحصنة.فروة الحمير المستأنسة داكنة غالباً، إلا على
مستوى البطن، مقدمة الرأس ومحيط العينان بلون أبيض، مع
هذا، توجد فروقات بينها في العالم، فالحمار المصري أبيض، أما
حمار البيري فداكن بنّي يميزه صليب القديس أندري على الظهر.
تقدم الأحمرة البرية ألواناً أخرى، من البني، إلى الرملي، والبني
الأحمر عند حمير التبت مثلاً.
تعيش الأحمرة البرية بشكل مستقل، عكس الأحصنة البرية التي
تتجاور بينها.
يعاني الحمار بشكل عام من نفس أمراض جنس الأخيلة، لكنه أيضاً أكثر حساسية لمرض التهاب الحوافر حين يكون الأكل المقدم له زائداً عن اللزوم.
ما يميز الحمير أيضاً، صوتها الحاد، النهيق والذي تستعمله في تواصلاتها، حيث يمكن سماعه على بعد 3 كم، وغالباً ما تستعمله الحمير الوحشية للتخويف في حالة الدفاع، مع الضرب بأرجلها الخلفية . ينحدر الحمار من الحمار الافريقي الوحشي من ثم انحدر الى كل المناطق من العالم. يعيش الحمار 25 سنة او ممكن اكثر وياكل اوراق الشجر الجافة. فهو يكفيه القليل من الطعام والشراب كغذاء.
الحمار حيوان ذكي ورشيق ويتحمل العمل الشاق بحيث لديه القدرة على السير بالاحمال الثقيلة.
ويتفحص الحمار الماء قبل شربه فإذا كان متسخ لا يقترب منه ,اما انثى الحمار لديها لبن غزير يستخدم كدواء .
يغطي جسم الحمار شعر قصير وخفيف اثناء الصيف ويتحول الى طويل في الشتاء .
البغل هو نتاج الحمار وانثى الحصان,من صفاته التوازن في المشي بين حواف الصخور المرتفعة وتكن البغل عنيد جدا فإذا رفض الحركة او حمل اي شئ من الصعب اثناءه على ذلك
اما الهيني فهو نتاج ذكر الحصان وانثى الحمار ويتميز بالرقة وتحمل الاثقال.
اما الحمار المخطط الزيبرا يعيش في جماعات في احراش السفانا شرق وجنوب افريقيا,وترعى الحمير المخططو في سهول مكشوفة قليلة الاشجار مما يمكنها من رؤية الخطر
عن بعد لانها تتميز بحاسة نظر قوية جداوحاسة شم قوية مما يساعدها على ادراك اقتراب العدوبسرعة, لذلك تقترب من هذه الفصيلة حيونات اخرى لانها عندما يقترب الخطر منها تنذر كل من حولها بالهرب.
حمار اوناجر يعيش اواسط اسيا يتميز بخط ابيض ظهري عريض.
